Mulled wine

Mulled wine is the hit at every Christmas market. However, homemade it often tastes better and can be enjoyed throughout the winter. The best part about DIY is that you know exactly what you have in the jar.

Whoever still reaches for the dubious ready-made mulled wine from the supermarket shelves with this simple recipe, we can no longer help.

Zutaten

For homemade mulled wine

  • 1 bottle of red wine, dry
  • 2 organic oranges
  • 7 cloves
  • 2 capsules green cardamom
  • 2 sticks cinnamon
  • 2 star anise
  • 50 g brown cane sugar

Barstuff

  • Pot
  • Sieve
  • Trowel
  • Peeler
  • Knife

Zubereitung

1
Wash the oranges hot and cut the peel into thin zests. The pulp is not needed.
2
Put the red wine in a pot with the spices. Then press the orange zests over the wine to release the essential oils from them and add them to the pot as well. Heat your mulled wine only to about 70 °C.
3
Once the mulled wine mixture is hot, add the cane sugar. Stir until the sugar has completely dissolved.
4
Taste the mulled wine, sweeten with a little sugar if necessary and serve hot immediately. Ready is your homemade mulled wine.
Hint:

For your mulled wine, you should go for a strong, fruity but not too woody red wine. Avoid cheap wines from discount stores and rather go for an artisanal wine in the basic segment between 6.00 and 9.00 euros a bottle.
Mulled wine should never be heated above 70 to 75 °C. The alcohol contained in the mulled wine evaporates at around 78 °C and some of the spices also suffer from excessive heat and release bitter substances into the mulled wine.
