Zombie

The legendary Zombie Cocktail was invented in 1934 by Donn Beach at Don the Beachcomber, a Polynesian restaurant and bar in Hollywood. The original recipe of the Tiki cocktail remains a closely guarded secret, but what is known is that the drink contains three different types of rum and has an exceptionally high alcohol content. In addition to the three types of rum, the cocktail contains Falernum, grenadine, Pernod, lime juice, absinthe, Donn’s Mix (a special blend of cinnamon syrup and grapefruit juice) and Angostura Bitters. Because of its ingredients, the Zombie is one of the more expensive representatives on many cocktail menus.

Since I don’t expect you to mix zombies on a daily basis, let’s skip making the Donn’s Mix. Preparing the special mix in larger quantities only makes sense if you work as a bartender and mix dozens of zombies every day. Due to its strength, some bars serve a maximum of two zombies per guest.

  • 45 ml Puerto Rican rum (golden)
  • 30 ml brown rum (Demerara)
  • 20 ml freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 25 ml absinthe
  • 15 ml falernum
  • 10 ml freshly squeezed grapefruit juice (pink)

  • 6 drops of Pernod
  • Mint sprig (garnish)
  • Crushed ice

Barstuff

Zubereitung

1
Wash the lime and grapefruit, cut them in half and squeeze one half each.
2
Add all ingredients to a shaker with a handful of crushed ice and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Pour the drink into the prepared tiki mug or highball glass (do not strain), top with more crushed ice if necessary, and garnish with a fresh mint sprig. Ready is your homemade zombie cocktail!
Hint:

Always use crushed ice for the zombie and serve it ice cold. The larger surface area melts the ice faster, cools the drink faster, and the resulting meltwater balances the drink.

Defused variants of the drink

Due to its popularity, countless variants of the zombie now exist. They often contain a much lower percentage of alcohol and are made with pineapple and passion fruit juice. This makes the cocktail much fruitier and sweeter than the original and much less potent.

You can tell a really high percentage zombie by the fact that you can set it on fire.

The right glass for the zombie cocktail

As a tiki cocktail, it should really be served in a fancy tiki cup. Often it is even served in its own cups, which have the shape of a skull. However, since home tiki mugs are a bit pointless, you can just use a large highball glass for him. In it also comes the beautiful orange color of the cocktail.
