White Russian

At the end of the 90s, White Russian became a cult drink, thanks to the movie The Big Lebowski. The favorite drink of the Dude, played by Jeff Bridges, consists of just three ingredients: Vodka, coffee liqueur and cream. Sounds simple at first, but has some pitfalls. Now learn how to mix the Dude’s cocktail yourself.

As with all drinks with only a few components, the quality of the White Russian is crucial. For example, try a Patrón XO Cafe as a coffee liqueur and use fresh cream rather than the H variety. For vodka, we like to use Noble Russian Vodka from Beluga.

For the White Russion

  • 6 cl vodka
  • 3 cl coffee liqueur
  • 3 cl cream
  • Ice cube


  • Old Fashioned Glass
  • Boston Shaker
  • Bar spoon


Fill a tumbler with ice cubes, pour in the vodka as well as the coffee liqueur and stir properly with a spoon.
Whip the cream with a hand mixer or a shaker until it is thick but not solid.
Now carefully pour the cream over the ice cubes so that it forms its own layer over the liquid. It's even easier if you pour the cream into glass over the back of a small spoon. Do not stir and enjoy directly.

To prevent the ice cubes from melting too quickly and thus watering down the drink, you should chill the individual components beforehand. Mistakenly, White Russian is often served with milk, which turns the delicious cult drink into a watery, brown broth.

How to drink the White Russian?

The Dude sips his drink stirred. For true connoisseurs, it’s an outrage, because in terms of taste, there’s a significant difference between enjoying it layered or stirred. What mistake you should never take from the Dude is to make your drink with milk or even powdered milk.

Use milk or cream?

Milk has no place in a good White Russian – at least that’s our opinion. Cream has a much higher fat content and as you may know, fat is a strong flavor carrier that elevates your drink to a whole other level.

When to drink a White Russian?

For Jeffrey Lebowski, you could serve it at any time of day and for any occasion. Strictly speaking, however, White Russian, due to its creamy consistency and sweet character, belongs to the after-dinner drinks and is served as a digestif after dinner.
